Cebu is the oldest city in the Philippines and is home to the historic artifact of Magellan’s Cross. It’s food is an amalgam of many cuisines with the most well-known dish being the famous Lechon Pig.The region hosts a diverse emerging economy that has been hard hit with restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Street children culture: A recent UNICEF study found that a staggering 31.4% of children in the Philippines live below the national poverty line. An estimated 2.85 million girls and boys ages 5-15 years are out-of-school and 8 in 10 children experience some form of violence, including physical, emotional, sexual and /or online abuse. Poverty has led many children to flee unstable homes and seek refuge among their peers on the streets.
While on the streets children as young as five years old are left alone, unsupervised by responsible adults. For mere survival children and youth learn to beg, steal and cheat for basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing. As a means to cope with harsh realities of street living children and youth abuse drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. Most street children have suffered some form of sexual abuse, are porn addicted and have been exploited.
